Ishita Malaviya is the first professional female surfer in a country of 1.2 billion people. First introduced to surfing 7 years ago by a visiting German student at her school, she and her boyfriend sold everything they had to buy the exchange student's surf board when he left India. Breaking multiple barriers (fear of the ocean, gender roles, skin color), Malaviya has gone on to pursue her dream of teaching surfing to other women and girls from villages near her local beach. Not only does she hope to break cultural boundaries, she also believes people will develop a healthier, more sustainable relationship with beaches and the ocean.
