"I want my kids to have heroes. It gives them an example, someone that they can look up to, that they can become." With these words teacher Shannon Garrison explains the motivation behind the Unsung Hero Project that she and her elementary school students in L.A. undertook to bring to light the story of Ralph Lazo. Ralph was a 17 year old of Mexican and Irish descent when his friends and classmates of Japanese descent were made to go to an internment camp with their families during Word War II. Ralph voluntarily joined them in the camp, sharing their lives. His compassion and deep friendship come to life again in the students' performance project focused on Ralph's selfless love for his friends.
