A trip to the Dominican Republic inspired Ben and Eliza Schmidt, of Brooklyn, to start an organization called Kids Play to gather toys for the children of sugar cane laborers in that country. Many of the workers are from neighboring Haiti and live in impoverished rural settlements where the children play with old cartons of milk and used tires. After an email campaign to raise funds, Ben, 12, and Eliza, 10, took bags of baseball equipment to the children, whose delight with this unexpected generosity shines through.
