Kyle Thiermann traveled to South Africa to investigate claims the government planned a large nuclear power plant for the region of Jeffreys Bay. Nuclear power is a risky venture, as demonstrated by the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011. Nuclear power also creates radioactive wastes that affect both the human populations and the natural sphere. As other countries such as Germany and Switzerland shut down their nuclear plants, Thiermann examines new sources of “free energy”. Those include wind and solar power. Such energies would reach indigent populations, and centralize energy away from corporations placing profit above preservation.
