“Here is what we seek: a compassion that can stand in awe at what the poor have to carry rather than stand in judgment at how they carry it.” -- Gregory Boyle. In this riveting 50-minute “On Being” audio interview with Krista Tippett, Fr. Gregory Boyle, the founder of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, talks about his experience with ex-offenders and those at risk of substance abuse and gang activities. His organization serves them with a spectrum of interventions from education and job training to counseling. But as he says service is not about a provider helping a recipient. Rather it is our calling to delight in each other. Listen and be moved by the stories and a poignant Q&A session as Fr. G shares his faith in the power of compassion to transform ourselves, others, and communities.

This if one of my favorite On Being interviews. You can just tell Fr. Greg Boyle walks his talk, and imparts so much empathy and wisdom in his reflections. His way of relating with mutuality/kinship demonstrates humility and reverence in action--just so inspiring. Love his humor too. :) His story about Cesar Chavez receiving adoration (forget when this is) paired with his birthday blessing story for Louie (at about the -50:00 mark) are a great laughter-inducing teaching duo.

  • Try to imagine how you would carry your life if you did not have the advantages you do.  Can you now see “the other” with more empathy?
