The US government is broke, say the “deficit hawks” when assessing the ever-growing federal debt and ongoing budget imbalance. As a consequence, we simply do not have the money to invest in the kinds of things that build a safe, strong, and healthy society. Cuts must be made in things like school funding, environmental protection, and healthcare delivery because we simply cannot afford them. “Not so fast!” says Annie Leonard and the Story of Stuff Project in this latest video in their instructive series. We are not broke at all; we just spend our tax dollars unwisely, offering subsidies and bailouts to powerful corporate interests of the “dinosaur economy” while neglecting to spend for a better future. “The good news,” says Ms. Leonard, “is that these are choices – and we can make better ones.”
