In the remote and impoverished region of the Eastern Cape (formerly Transkei) in South Africa, Chris McConnachie, a medical doctor, and his wife Jenny, a nurse, built a network of local volunteer women. Since 1984, these women have managed, with confidence, the clinic and the neighborhood's local school. Unfortunately, tensions between Itipini and the neighboring community resulted in the razing of Itipini, leaving most of the clients of the health clinic homeless.
