185 voices. 243 tracks. 12 countries. A choir unlike any other. What started as a simple social media experiment, has become a poetic metaphor of our shared humanity and the power of connection.

Acclaimed composer and conductor Eric Whitacre offered the sheet music of his original composition, "Lux Aurumque", as a free download and invited singers to submit a video of themselves performing one part (soprano, alto, tenor, or bass). These rather ordinary videos of solo performances were then pieced together to form a choir of singers who have never met each other...but have unwittingly created music in perfect harmony together.

It goes so far beyond the individuals to the point where I feel intimately connected with each and every one of them and my connection, just by viewing this video, adds to the meaning of what we are all experiencing.     It occurred to me after listening to the gorgeous harmony created here, that perhaps this video should be played for the world leaders that hold humanities fate in their hands.     On a regular basis, I am asked by my students what does it matter if I am working for justice here in my little sphere of influence (my classroom, my family or friendship circle, my workplace). Social injustice is so pervasive, structural, and seemingly endless. What I found so inspiring about this piece is how it captures the collective effect when individual people work towards a common goal - even when that work is seemingly done in isolation.     i actually sang this song at the texas music educators association my senior year of highschool and he was there to hear us perform it. i never got to hear what we sounded like though. if we sounded anything like this it was a success because this sounds amazing.

  • Think about how your individual actions, small or large, fit into the larger picture. Think about someone on the other side of the world engaging in a harmonious act, and let that inspire you to do the same right where you are!

  • Post up a  board and ask random people to add photos, quotes, postcards, etc. to create a collective collage. What does the end result say to you?
